A husband and wife duo have landed in trouble, after sharing a photo shopped nude picture of President Emmerson Mnangagwa on WhatsApp.
Sarudzayi Ambiri Jani, 38, and her husband Remember Simbarashe Ncube, 34, were arrested and charged for undermining the authority of or insulting the president in contravention of the Criminal Law Act.
The arresting officials said the couple allegedly made abusive, indecent, and obscene statements about President Mnangagwa, which may inspire feelings of hostility towards him given that the utterances are false.
The couple is said to have shared a photoshopped nude picture of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, wearing a Zanu PF scarf around his neck and a male organ covered by a mask.
The picture is said to have been shared on a WhatsApp group for Ward 3 residents in Beitbridge.
It so happened that Chief Inspector Kenneth Mushongahande, of the Zimbabwe Republic Police is also a member of the said group.
He then reported the couple to the law enforcement agents who arrested them and detained the couple overnight at Beitbridge Urban Police Station.
Mushongahande said police officers arrested the couple after a manhunt and said the couple had no right to publish the photoshopped picture.
Takavingei Mahachi who the councillor for Ward 3 in Beitbridge, who is the creator of said group for residents’ will testify against the couple as a state witness when the trial commences on July 3.
The couple are also facing charges of
contravening the Censorship and Entertainments Act, which criminalises the production and publishing of certain material.
If found guilty, they could face a year behind bars.
Government critics and other social commentators have questioned the number of people who of late are being persecuted for dissent after exercising freedom of speech.
