Zimbabwe is facing a severe bread shortage crisis with reports indicating that the current supply of raw materials will last for less than 45 days.
According to sources close to the bread industry the nation’s wheat stocks have been affected by poor harvest and Covid-19 lockdowns which have slowed down deliveries.
The foreign currency shortages have also compounded the situation.
Reports that reached this publication on Wednesday morning indicated that major bakeries have already halted bread production due.
Bakers Inn is said to have halted bread production due to market resistance as the price of bread has sky rocketed beyond the reach of many ordinary citizens while Lobels and NatBake are reported to have halted production due to diesel unavailability.
Bread makers require diesel for ovens and deliveries, and they report that they have not been prioritised in diesel allocation.
