BEAUTIFUL beaches, breathtaking driving routes, a world famous mountain. What’s not to like about Cape Town?
How about that it’s now the eighth most violent city in the world, according to the annual rankings published by the Mexican Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice?
The watchdog organisation’s data looks at the 50 most dangerous cities in the world according to 2019 crime stats based on every 100 000 habitants.
CAPE TOWN GOES FROM 15 TO 8
Published earlier this month, the listing shows that Cape Town climbed from 15 position in the previous year’s ranking due to an increase in the murder rate from 66.4 murders per 100 000 people to 68.3 murders per 100 000.
Cape Town was 9 on the list in 2015, but subsequently it has improved its ranking.
Its 8 place in the latest ranking puts it just behind the famous Mexican resort city of Acapulco and one ahead of the city of St Louis in the USA.
Other South African cities that feature on the list are Nelson Mandela Bay (24 position), Durban (35 ) and Johannesburg (41 ).
Johannesburg was not on the list for the three previous years.
TOP FIVE MOST VIOLENT ALL IN MEXICO
The top five most violent cities on earth are all Mexican: Tijuana, Ciudad Juárez, Uruapan, Irapuato and Obregón.
Tijuana, located on the Mexico-US border, is a magnet for young Californians and also serves as a corridor for drug cartels and illegal immigrants entering the US. It registered 134 murders for every 100 000 inhabitants.
South America dominates the Top 50 list, with a smattering of entries from South Africa, the US and the Caribbean.
