He also said he was only told in 2017 that his character is gay after being with the show since he was 12 years old.

Viewers saw Clement recently coming out of the closet to his family and being rejected by his friends.
The actor also revealed the challenges he faced while playing the role.

“They spoke to me about my role being gay in 2017, so it gave me time to prepare.”

He spoke to people who went through what his character is going through so that he can go gather his research and better understand how it feels.

Leremi told TshisaLIVE that it was difficult for him to add a new element to his character without changing who Clement already was to viewers.

He also understands that people in the LGBTIQ+ community are often misunderstood and that even in the story, it was vital for his on-screen family to reject him to show families what their children go through.

The actor told the publication that how Clement’s grandmother (Mantulie) reacted to him coming out was to show people … how they are mistreating their own children, their own brothers and sisters.

“Me, living in Soweto, I see it on a daily basis – how a gay man and a lesbian woman are being mistreated by people in the community. They are excluded by the community and no one wants to associate with them because they are gay. No, this is not right!”
