Mzansi Magic and (Sic) Entertainment have just announced that seasoned judges Unathi Nkayi and Randal Abrahams will not be part of Idols SA season 18.

Shirley Adonisi who is M-Net’s director for local entertainment channels told Channel 24:

“The channel will not be renewing their contracts with for the upcoming season of the popular singing show. We are taking a fresh approach to the judging panel to retain audiences and stay competitive in the Sunday night timeslot.”

Shirley ended her statement by saying that they salute both Unathi, Randall and thank them both for great innings on Idols.

“Randall and Unathi have demonstrated high levels of professionalism and made an impact on the South African entertainment scene that will continue to be felt for some time to come. We wish them well in their endeavours.”

The exit of Randall Abrahams comes a week after the media reported that fired Kaya FM radios personality Unathi Nkayi will not be returning to the singing competition and that Somizi Mhlongo will be returning as a judge this season.

Sources from the production revealed:

“Idols gave Somizi a break based on allegations of gender-based violence. Unathi was entangled in the allegations that she made against Sizwe which were found to be false. So she now has to be given a break from the show.”

The mole added that Somizi was given the green light because he is obviously the life of the show and that there was a huge difference when he was not on the show, in terms of declining viewership.

“So he will be making a return this season after he was given a break last year (2021) to sort out his personal issues.”

Auditions for Idols SA season 18 begins on Sunday, 23 January 2022.
