PEOPLE SHOT DEAD AT A TAVERN IN SOWETO
The exact age of the people who were shot is not yet know yet but police have confirmed the incident .
Gauteng Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela told eNCA that primary investigations suggest that people were enjoying themselves in the tavern and suspects came in and just shot at the people randomly.
Mawela said detectives are on scene and they estimate that the age range of the people who were shot and killed is between 19 and 35.
Mawela said that 23 people were injured and 12 were confirmed dead at the scene and 11 were rushed to hospital and two people died in hospital.
“People were enjoying themselves at the tavern and all of a sudden heard gunshots and others thought a shooting was happening outside. It is only when they realised that people were dropping dead when they pretended that they are also dead or injured and fell on the ground as well,” Mawela said.
The suspects reportedly escaped with a white quantum.
The Soweto incident comes just weeks after 21 teenagers were also tragically killed at Enyobeni tavern in Scenery Park, East London. The funeral was held this week and President Cyril Ramaphosa said he has received many requests to increase the legal drinking age to 21.
